How a small startup founded in 1976 grew into a global technology enterprise
Shiv Nadar’s journey is a story of ambition, innovation and the belief that India could become a major force in the global technology industry. From starting a small computer hardware company in the 1970s to building one of India’s best known IT enterprises, Nadar helped shape the country’s technology landscape.
Early Life and Education
Born on July 14, 1945, in Moolaipozhi, Tamil Nadu, Shiv Nadar developed an interest in technology and engineering during his formative years. He studied electrical and electronics engineering at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore.
After completing his education, Nadar began his professional career at Cooper Engineering before joining Delhi based engineering company DCM. His time at DCM proved particularly important because it brought him together with colleagues who would later become his business partners.
The Beginning of HCL in 1976
In 1976, Nadar and a group of colleagues left their jobs to establish Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL). The company began with a bold ambition: to develop indigenous computing technology at a time when India’s computer industry was still in its early stages.
Starting from a modest office in Delhi, the founding team believed that microprocessors would transform businesses and everyday life. Their decision to focus on this emerging technology laid the foundation for HCL’s future.
According to the company’s history, HCL introduced an 8-bit microprocessor-based computer in 1978, an important milestone in India’s early computing industry.
From Hardware to Global Technology
HCL initially concentrated on computer hardware, developing products for India’s growing demand for computing solutions. Over time, the company expanded into software development, IT services, engineering and enterprise technology.
The changing technology landscape created new opportunities, and HCL adapted its business model accordingly. Through partnerships, research and product development, the organisation gradually expanded beyond India.
A significant development came when HCL Technologies emerged from the group’s research and development operations as a dedicated IT services business. It went on to build relationships with international clients and establish a presence across global markets.
Today, HCLTech operates as a global technology company, providing services and solutions in areas including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, engineering, cybersecurity and digital transformation.
Building More Than a Technology Company
Nadar’s vision extended beyond the growth of a single business. He believed that education could create opportunities and help transform society.
In 1994, he established the Shiv Nadar Foundation to improve access to quality education and support the development of future leaders.
The foundation has established educational institutions across school and university levels. Its initiatives include VidyaGyan, Shiv Nadar University and other programmes focused on education, research and social development.
Through these efforts, Nadar brought the same long-term institution-building approach to philanthropy that had shaped his business career.
Recognition and Leadership
Nadar’s contribution to India’s technology industry earned him several national and international honours. In 2008, he received the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, in recognition of his contribution to trade and industry.
He gradually moved away from day-to-day leadership at HCLTech and became its Chairman Emeritus and Strategic Advisor to the Board. His daughter, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, took on a larger leadership role in the group’s business operations and became Chairperson of HCLTech.
Nadar’s journey demonstrates how a technology venture founded with a small team and a long-term vision can grow into an international enterprise.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
From India’s early computer hardware industry to today’s global technology services market, Shiv Nadar has been associated with several important phases of the country’s digital development.
HCL’s evolution from a hardware startup into a diversified technology group reflects his belief in innovation, engineering and the importance of adapting to change.
His legacy is not limited to business achievements. Through the Shiv Nadar Foundation, he has also invested in education and institution-building, extending his influence beyond the technology sector.
Shiv Nadar’s story is ultimately about thinking ahead, taking calculated risks and building institutions designed to last. His journey remains an important chapter in the story of India’s rise as a global technology destination.
