Kunal Bahl: From Building Snapdeal to Backing India’s Next Generation of Startups

From an e-commerce entrepreneur to a startup investor on Shark Tank India, Kunal Bahl’s journey reflects the changing face of Indian entrepreneurship.

The Early Years: Education and Ambition

Kunal Bahl is an Indian technology entrepreneur and investor best known as the co-founder of Snapdeal. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania through its prestigious Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology, earning degrees in engineering and business from Penn Engineering and the Wharton School.

Before entering entrepreneurship, Bahl worked as a product manager at Microsoft. His early professional experience exposed him to technology driven businesses and helped shape his interest in building companies of his own.

Rather than following a conventional corporate career, he returned to India to explore the opportunities emerging in the country’s growing internet economy.

The Birth of Snapdeal

In February 2010, Kunal Bahl joined hands with his university friend Rohit Bansal to establish Snapdeal. The business initially operated as an online daily-deals platform, offering discounts and coupons for restaurants, entertainment and other services.

The founders soon realised that the opportunity in Indian online shopping extended far beyond discount coupons. They shifted the company’s focus towards a broader online marketplace, allowing customers to purchase products from different sellers.

This strategic change helped Snapdeal expand into categories such as fashion, electronics, footwear and home products. The company’s official history describes how the original deals business evolved into an e-commerce marketplace.

Scaling Up in India’s E-Commerce Race

As online shopping gained popularity, Snapdeal became one of India’s prominent e-commerce companies. It attracted investments from major global investors, including SoftBank, Alibaba and Foxconn.

The company experienced a period of rapid expansion, competing with major players such as Amazon and Flipkart. Its growth demonstrated the potential of India’s digital consumer market and attracted international attention to the country’s startup ecosystem.

However, the e-commerce sector also became increasingly competitive. Snapdeal faced business challenges and undertook restructuring as it reconsidered its strategy.

Instead of continuing to pursue every segment of online retail, the company shifted towards value commerce, focusing on affordable products and price-conscious consumers across smaller cities and towns.

Beyond Snapdeal: Building Titan Capital

Bahl’s entrepreneurial journey did not stop with e-commerce. He also became an active investor in early-stage startups through Titan Capital, which he co-founded with Rohit Bansal.

The investment firm backs entrepreneurs across sectors including consumer technology, fintech, healthcare, SaaS, consumer brands and business services.

According to Titan Capital’s official profile, Bahl has invested in more than 300 startups. Its portfolio includes well-known businesses such as Ola, Urban Company, Razorpay, OfBusiness and Mamaearth.

His transition from founder to investor reflects a broader role in India’s startup ecosystem: supporting entrepreneurs who are at the beginning of their business journeys.

From Startup Founder to Shark Tank India

Bahl reached a wider television audience when he joined Shark Tank India Season 4 as an investor and judge.

His addition to the panel brought the perspective of an entrepreneur who had experienced the challenges of building and scaling an internet business. Unlike investors who focus primarily on a particular industry, Bahl’s experience spans e-commerce, technology and early-stage investing.

His appearance on the show introduced him to viewers beyond the startup community. It also gave aspiring founders an opportunity to present their business ideas and seek investment from experienced entrepreneurs.

His participation was announced ahead of the season’s January 2025 premiere, as reported by The Indian Express.

Leadership Beyond Business

Bahl’s work also extends to industry and policy discussions. He has been associated with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the National Startup Advisory Council and other organisations working on entrepreneurship and business development.

He is also associated with AceVector, the digital commerce group that brings together businesses including Snapdeal, Unicommerce and Stellaro Brands. His AceVector profile outlines his leadership responsibilities and involvement in India’s startup ecosystem.

The Kunal Bahl Story

Kunal Bahl’s journey is not simply about building an e-commerce company. It is also about adapting to changing markets, learning from business challenges and helping other entrepreneurs turn ideas into companies.

From launching Snapdeal in 2010 to backing hundreds of startups through Titan Capital and joining Shark Tank India, Bahl has taken on multiple roles in India’s evolving business landscape.

His story highlights an important lesson for aspiring founders: entrepreneurship is not just about creating a successful business; it is also about recognising opportunities, adapting when circumstances change and contributing to the next generation of innovation.
